The West Country broadly encompasses Somerset, Devon and Cornwall but it is
difficult to say where exactly it starts.
We have included Dorset and Wiltshire under this heading but kept Somerset separate as
of course we live in this County and there are perhaps more local links that
could equally be under the heading of Wincanton.
Each county is in many ways quite distinct. Wiltshire is typified by its
rolling chalk downs, almost prairie like in places and at the other extreme
Cornwall has its rugged granite moorland and coastline - I think we are
extremely lucky in this small island to have such diverse geology and geography.
Its is perhaps difficult for a visitor to appreciate this so hopefully our
website will help in showing what our corner of the U.K. has to offer.

To put everything in perspective Wincanton, which is in the
Eastern-most part of Somerset, is just over 100 miles from London which
is roughly 2 hours by road. Plymouth in Devon is a similar distance.
Wincanton to Truro or central Cornwall is about 150 miles and is 3 hours
but the last leg to Lands End and other remote places can take another
hour or more. |

The "Westcountry" is a beautiful part of England steeped in ancient history,
mythology, legends and folklore. The varying landscape evokes many different
sensations and even the smallest diversion from the main roads is likely to be
rewarded with a discovery of some sort.
This ancient landscape has been occupied for thousands of years and has been
the site of numerous important events in our history. Living here is wonderful
and on the following pages for Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall we have
tried to give you a flavour of what there is to offer. We hope you enjoy it.
